About Show Jumping
Show Jumping is an incredible spectator sport that never fails to draw a crowd. As well as boasting numerous high profile competition circuits, show jumping is one of the three Olympic equestrian sports, along with dressage and eventing.
This exhilarating competitive sport was born in the 18th century and involved competitors talking off across country to jump obstacles. Spectators were not happy with this format as they wished to follow the riders as they jumped. This lead to jumping competitions being held in arenas, thus show jumping as we know it today was born.
In today’s format show jumping involves a skilled horse and rider combination tackling 10 to 13 ‘knockable’ obstacles. Penalties are incurred for each obstacle that is knocked down or refused. In some classes riders ride ‘against the clock’ incurring time penalties for not completing the course within a set time limit.
