BAXTER BOOTS WESTERN PLEASURE COMPETITION

One of the most popular classes within the spectrum of Western disciplines is the Western Pleasure class.  Being competative in the Western Pleasure class neccecitates knowing what the judge is looking for  - and being able to present your horse in that manner.

In the late 1940's and early 1950's Western Pleasure was introduced into the equine sporting spectrum.  To each rodeo, the ranch hands would bring their best riding horses.  Each ranch hand would have one, two, or even three horses for cutting cows or riding fence lines.  These fence riding horses were always their most comfortable horses, with a relaxed gait.  From this, the sport of Western Pleasure was created.

The Western Pleasure class means that the mounts, above all, must appear to be the most pleasurable to ride.  The judges are looking for a free flowing stride in a mount, keeping within his/her conformation, covering a reasonable amount of ground with little effort.  The horse should "carry his head and neck in a relaxed natural position with his poll level or slightly above the level of his withers." The mount is normally controlled on a loose rein and should respond to invisable cues.

Horses are not shown individually in a Western Pleasure class, but must make their impression out of a larger field.  The horses will move around the arena behind one another, and respond to the directions given the them.  Whilst being shown on the rail, the horses must demonstrate their movement at a walk, a jog, and a lope in both directions.  Whenever a transition is called for, the aids must be given without the observer being able to recognise them.  The tranistions must be prompt, smooth, and without the horse loosing its composure, without slinging its head, leaning on the bit, swishing its tail, or any other unpleasing habits.

EQUITANA Melbourne 2010 and Baxter Boots and Shoes proudly offer the public a chance to see the top Western Pleasure horses battle it out during this prestigious competition.
