McDowells Australian Brumby Challenge - Making A Difference

Did you know that Australia has the largest wild horse population in the world? A large percentage of these horses are in NSW's Kosciuszko national park and the Alpine National Park in Victoria which is where the VBA ( Victorian Brumby Association) caught the brumbies for this year’s McDowells Australian Brumby Challenge...

McDowells Herbal is extremely proud to be sponsoring this event and to making a difference to these horses lives and health.

"To be a part of this wonderful challenge that enables horses to live another day is something I'm passionate about. It is critical for the brumbies to be well supported with plain and natural feeds, and herbs are an obvious choice for a wild horse’s digestion”. Explains Cath "any change in location and experience can be very stressful and to help with this we have included a wonderful calming products for digestive health -Equigesta -pre and our Performa-A-Calm tonic”

Cath explains to us why these two products were chosen for this challenge.

"Both these products were chosen due to the broad support that this combination provides for the horse that is undergoing a transformation. Research in people and horses are now confirming the involvement of poor gut health and microbiota with unpredictable behaviour. The Vagus nerve is the major nerve that is affected by an unhealthy gut. The vagus nerve is responsible for the parasympathetic response (rest and digest) as well as the flight/Fight response. The vagus nerve is also the pathway taken to inform the immune system of how well the gut is doing thereby stimulating an immune response as well as stimulating the gut/brain axis.

If we can influence the Gut/Brain axis early on in training and transitioning all horses, there is a much greater chance of successful, healthier and safer outcomes for both horse and rider."

The Performa-A-Calm includes cider vinegar extract is formulated to nourish and calm the nervous disposition. It contains 'Nervines' or nervous system tonics to allow change to a nervy horse's nature and habit patterns of reaction to certain circumstances.

Horse owners feedback suggests that horses become much calmer and more confident under stress and will return to form more quickly after competition or travelling whist on the tonic.

The mix includes: - Borage, Kelp, Mistletoe, Skullcap, Vervain, Valerian and Zisyphus along with the Bach Flowers Aspen, Cerrato, Cherry Plum, Mimulus, Larch, Rock Rose and Rescue Remedy.

The other product supplied to the trainers is Equigesta-Pre.

Equigesta-Pre-is specially formulated to aid in creating a healthy balance of intestinal microorganisms which help to keep your horses gut working as it should. "Our unique blend can be used daily as an equine prebiotic to support and encourage the growth and activity of good bacteria in the digestive system- much like compost does for your garden." Explains Cath "Ulcers from Bute and chemical use, or gut pain from inflammation and tension is a problem for many horses. In response to this need, I have developed a beautiful new prevention product called Equigesta-Pre-which contains pure plant powders and natural clay hindgut buffers to not only prevent digestive ulceration but also to act as a pre-biotic and digestive improver.

To learn more about this concept see this article here.

Equigesta-Pre contains: Brewer’s Yeast, Liquorice Powder, Fennel Powder, Slippery Elm Powder, pure Aloe Vera Powder ( all Aloe Vera liquids are made from this concentrated powder) and the essential Chamomile powder with Bentonite Clay. This all in one is given at a small dose rate of 50 grams per day.
