From a young age, Steve‘s passion for horses was evident, and he has been on a steadfast path ever since to continually expand on both his knowledge and skill. In 2007, Steve started liberty training, whilst working with one of Australia’s best film and stunt horseman, leaning into and developing his own style over the years Steve’s ability to successfully train horses to work softly, and obediently, regardless of the handler or riders experience, is vital in the film and stunt industry. The foundations of liberty training has seen his equine stars seamlessly, transition to film, television, and professional photography shoots.
This skilled group of equine actors have graced several television series, including Highcountry, La Brea and The Block, as well as Sportsbet commercial, ‘ Attila ‘ at Sydney Opera House and the covers for the spring racing carnivals.
Steve‘s experience ranges from breaking in and educating young horses intended for dressage, eventing, showjumping, raining and camp, drafting the specialist skills in re-training problem horses. In 2023 Australian Stunt and Film Horses was created to encompass Steve’s liberty work, public displays, an the Australian film industry to feel a need for quality, well prepared, educated, and experienced film and stunt horses.
Nirrelle Somerville is the other half of Australian Stunt and Film Horses, at times she the make up artist, the creative designer, the wrangler and even the stunt double for the lead actress.
With her stunning Friesian Zulu her passion for dressage and liberty some times sees her jump off in her display remove the bridle and play with Zulu at libertyRegular three day clinics and lessons at their purpose-built Macedon Ranges property attract riders and enthusiasts of all levels with the goal of equipping participants with an understanding and knowledge, so they may have lasting and rewarding relationships with their horses, and learn to fall in love with liberty.
