Horses have existed on the Timor Island since at least the 6th century. In 1292 Kublai Khans armies brought a mixture of Mongol horses when they invaded the Indonesian Islands. The intermixing of Portugese breeds of horses when the Portugese coloniesed eventually developed the hardy Timor Pony.
It is a culturally significant horse breed to Australia, because having been used to living in tropical environments, they thrived in Australia and were often used to develop the Australian Breeds.
