No matter what the breed though the one thing our horses have in common is that we as owners want them to be healthy and happy. Breed Village Sponsor, Kelato Animal Health, has spent over thirty years helping people with equine health and nutritional issues and has listed three of the common questions asked every day.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP ENSURE MY HORSE STAYS SOUND?

Healthy legs equal longevity! Injuries are often the result of several minor incidents of inflammation that accumulate over time. Increase exercise intensity slowly to stretch and build up the leg tissues. After work, it’s beneficial to draw the heat out of the legs by using ice, a clay poultice or cold compression bandages to reduce swelling. Joint supplements can also be useful long term to maintain the strength and elasticity of the tendons, ligaments and joint cartilage.

COULD MY HORSE HAVE GASTRIC ULCERS?

Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) has been around for a long time and is extremely common and even seemingly healthy horses can suffer from an upset digestive system resulting in performance and behavioural issues. The term EGUS is now divided into Equine Squamous Gastric Disease (ESGD) and Equine Glandular Gastric Disease (EGGD) with A/Prof Ben Sykes, a leading EGUS researcher, describing them as “Like the odd couple.  They just live together in the same apartment (the stomach) but are not related to each other.”

While veterinary advice should always be sought, digestive supplements can be successful in improving gut function and enhancing feed conversion efficiency.

Don’t miss your chance to catch A/ Prof Dr Ben Sykes (our very own world-leading EGUS expert) live at EQUITANA Melbourne where will be delivering not one, but THREE educator sessions FREE with your Equitana ticket and at the Kelato Breed Village in 2021.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP MY SPOOKY HORSE?

We all know what it’s like to have an unfocused horse on our hands – even the simplest task becomes a struggle. There are many reasons why horses are spooky or behave erratically, after all, they are ‘flight’ animals. Factors can include diet, age, level of training and pain or discomfort. If you can rule these out and behavior doesn’t improve with training over time, then your horse may benefit from a calming supplement to address possible nutrient deficiencies. Ingredients such as Magnesium, Vitamin E, Tryptophan and Thiamine can reduce the stress response, stabilising mood and relaxing the horse.

Kelato have got you covered with our extensive range of horse health and nutrition products. Our team will be on hand everyday at the Kelato Breed Village, so drop in and ask us how Kelato can help with your horse health needs. See you there!
