Amie Power
Training
Located in the Adelaide Hill of SA, Amie owns and runs Power Equestrian. She is an Equestrian Australia State Level Showhorse Judge, which has taken her all over Australia judging. She is currently working towards her National Level Judging accreditation. Applying for and winning a scholarship with The Australian Institute of Sports, completed her Equestrian Australia Level 1 General Coaching qualification.
Amie has been around horses her whole life but did not actually have her own horse until the age of 12. Saving her paper round money, Amie paid $400 for her little grey 12yo Connemara mare, Cindy. Cindy was the all-round perfect pony, going out on trail rides, pony club, showing and eventing. Amie always had a love for horses and showing. Training and preparing was always part of the fun and excitement. Looking immaculate and riding a good work out in the show ring made her happy. Amie did not have the money to go and buy trained horses to compete, so has always had to work with green uneducated horses. “Looking back now, having to train from the ground up was actually the beginning of where I am as a trainer today”.
Researching trainers and their methods thoroughly, Amie would spend countless hours working with these trainers to become a better more knowledgeable trainer. She started to develop her own training program from what she had liked and considered what she wanted her horses to be. This has been tried and adapted over the years to be the program that is used today on her own and client’s horses alike. Amie believes that communication with the owners from the beginning of the starting and re training process ensures understanding of how the horses are trained. “Without this knowledge, the horse can become very confused and, in some cases, develop behavioral issues due to confusion”. She believes horsemanship is not just something for western riders. Its principles should be used in the training and education of all disciplines of Equestrian.

Horses for courses
Correct training is universal for any discipline you ride, including trail riding. Starting and training horses should be a consistent process which can give you a quiet reliable trail riding horse as well as an English discipline competition horse.
Not everyone can afford to have both a show horse and a pleasure horse so your training should be able to give you and your horse the best of both worlds, as well as a well rounded reliable partner.

Introducing kids to horses
Making the choice of introducing kids to riding is not just a matter of finding a horse and letting them jump aboard. It is essential the the right horse/pony is chosen and the children learn the skills of not just riding the horse, but also safety.
Safety starts on the ground. How to act around horses, to use caution being behind them and how to enter the paddock to feed them. Then begins the riding. Choosing the right horse is a critical part of the process. Terrible accidents have occurred due to thinking all little horses are kids horses. This in fact is not correct. This session will help adults in what they need to be aware of when starting kids and ponies
