Amanda Wilson

Training & Horsemanship

Amanda Wilson is a Grand Prix show jumper, horsemanship coach, show jumping coach, wild horse trainer and human trauma coach.

She has competed at the highest level of show jumping in New Zealand, represented her country at the prestigious Road to the Horse Wild Card Championships, trained wild horses around the globe, started countless horses under saddle, coached thousands of riders and co-written two books, Showtym Viking and The Wilson Sisters Horse and Pony Guide.

While Amanda has had impressive success at the highest levels of show jumping, with some pretty credible achievements to her name, she realised several years ago that there was something missing in her training, so turned her focus to gaining better understanding of horsemanship and flatwork, as well as how horses (and riders) process and deal with stress.

Her work with human trauma, which relates very closely to horses, has given her a unique window into understanding horse behaviour and how to educate them in a way that promotes happy, stress free individuals.

Dealing with Stress & Anxiety Behaviours in the Horse

I specialise in horse behaviour and work to help horses find relaxation and thoughtfulness in their work. This involves identifying a horses survival responses and then assessing whether those responses are caused by physical, chemical or emotional stress within the body. If the issue is emotional, I can correct these issues through good horsemanship and training. If the issues are chemical or psychical, I can help identify the issue in the horse, with many issues fixed through my own massage and stretching techniques or I can recommend professional care for ongoing treatment.

Over the past few years, my speciality has been to pick up on subtle signs of tension within the horse and determine their cause. This has seen me uncover, and in many cases correct, a huge range of behavioural issues in horses including kissing spine, broken pelvis’s, splints, teeth issues, training issues, trauma and PTSD issues, ulcers, saddle issues, body issues and more. In my presentations I am able to quickly assess, identify and in many cases correct the issue in front of the audience at hand, giving spectators a whole new level of understanding of horse behaviours and how to address them.

Dealing with Horse related Trauma

I specialise in human trauma and am able to help people work through fear related issues, PTSD, anxiety, depression and emotional triggers. My trauma seminars leave people with a whole new insight into their own traumatic experiences and gives them a new range of skills to address past issues. These seminars can also be directed as riding issues, and be taught alongside equine behaviours.
