Dr Nerida Richards

Dr Nerida Richards B Rur. Sc (Hon1) PhD RAnNutr. Nerida graduated from the University of New England with a degree in Rural Science in 1999 and a PhD in Equine Nutrition in 2004. Nerida is a registered animal nutritionist (equine) with the Nutrition Society of Australia.

Nerida founded Equilize Horse Nutrition in 2003 and has been working as a consulting equine nutritionist ever since, providing high level technical support to feed and supplement companies in Australia and abroad. The last 16 years has seen Nerida work with more than 30 companies, focusing on product development, education, research and on-farm support. Nerida also developed and commercialised the FeedXL ration balancing software that is used extensively by horse owners here in Australia as well as the USA, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, the Middle East and South East Asia.

A true country girl at heart, Nerida has always had a love of horses, a passion for agriculture and a zeal for and natural understanding of nutrition. In her typical style of combining credible science with practical knowledge and a bunch of props she stole from her kids, Nerida shares her knowledge in a way that is easy to understand and simple to put into practice to improve the health and performance of your own horses.

Feeding for longevity

This lecture will cover the basics of nutrition you need to know to feed your horse for longevity, and includes information on: - Feeding for gut health: we will cover gut physiology, the importance of fibre, the dangers of uncooked grains and the importance of a healthy gut bacteria population. - Feeding for immune function: looking at nutrients important for a robust immune system. - Feeding for long-term insulin sensitivity to reduce the risk of laminitis: discover the feeds and forages that will support longer term insulin sensitivity and ones to avoid plus we look at gut bacteria and the role they may play. - Feeding to avoid ulcers: focusing on what to feed and when to avoid ulcers.

Nutrition for Muscle and Joint Health

This lecture will look in detail at: - Feeding for muscle: focusing on protein quality, the role of leucine and a look at the types of protein used in Australian horse feeds and their pros and cons. - Feeding healthy joints: looking at the importance of lifetime balanced nutrition right from conception for healthy joints, with a focus on minerals and protein. - The role can supplements play: Here we will focus on the importance of diet first, THEN supplements if justified. We will look at main supplements that may assist muscles and joints. - Nutrition related diseases that will affect joint and muscle health: including nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism (bighead disease) and tying up
