Gut health in the horse: the important roles of the gut & promoting good gut health
The term ‘gut health’ is commonly used in equine circles, with many horse people appreciating the importance of good gut health, yet not fully understanding exactly what gut health is. In this presentation we explore exactly what ‘gut health’ is; why gut health is so important; the role of the gut in immune health, temperament, behaviour and inflammatory conditions; factors which influence gut health; what owners and riders can do to promote optimal gut health. The respective roles which feed type and feeding patterns, medications, stress, supplements, and daily management practices have in relation to gut health are all explored.

The role of supplements: are they necessary? What to choose?
The equine market is saturated with a myriad of dietary, nutritional and herbal supplements- all promising to yield amazing benefits to the horse. Even the most well educated owners find confusion in knowing exactly what (if any) supplement(s) their horse should be given.
In this presentation we cover the appropriate use of supplementation, clear indications for the use of supplements, benefits of common supplements, when supplements shouldn’t be used, how to determine a good quality supplement, pitfalls of supplementation, why supplements may not ‘work’, appropriate dosing of supplements, and cautions that need to be exercised in supplement use.
